The Albuquerque Genealogical Society Celebrates 30 Years
On September 21, 2002, the Albuquerque Genealogical Society celebrated its 30th Anniversary at the Special Collections Public Library. The celebration coincided with Governor Gary E. Johnson and Mayor Martin J. Chavez declaring this day
"FAMILY HISTORY DAY".
The Governor of New Mexico and the Mayor of Albuquerque issued proclamations by the state and city hororing the day. Irene Garcia, City Chief Financial Officer, represented Mayor Chavez. She read the proclamation from Governor Johnson. Leroy Garcia presented a proclamation from the New Mexico Genealogical Society and special guests including former Albuquerque Mayor Harry Kinney who was in office during the renovation of the Special Collections Library.
The guest book was signed by 243 people (we estimated more than 250 attended) and AGS signed up fourteen new members. Attendees came from near and far. Areas represented in New Mexico included: Albuquerque, Angel Fire, Cedar Creast, Corrales, Edgewood, Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, and Tijeras. Out of town guests came from Kansas City and Carthage, Misouri; Kensington, California; Amarillo and Austin, Texas; Columbia, South Carolina, and Paris, France.
Demonstrations, displays, and information tables were attracting a great number of guests. Refreshments were fantastic and enjoyed by all. It was a FUN DAY!
Everywhere you looked AGS members were in period costumes as history came alive. Dressed as one of their ancestors may have dressed, the costumed volunteers mixed with the attendees and shared stories and their genealogical research experiences. A special highlight of the day was a historic fashion show, "400 Years of American Fashion," that took participants on a trip through times as they imagined how our ancesters may have dressed.
It was a really special day for those interested in genealogy to share with their families and community. The displays, demonstrations, information tables, refreshments, and fashion show were enjoyed by all!
Congratulations to the organizers, Donald Barnes, Nany Greenberg, and Karen Jones, and to the many, many volunteers who made it happen!
